Ellen DeGeneres, the former talk show host, has publicly shown her support for comedian Rosie O’Donnell amid a disagreement with President Donald Trump, following her relocation to Britain last year due to Trump’s return to power.
In an Instagram post, DeGeneres quoted O’Donnell while sharing Trump’s statement, in which he suggested that she should have her U.S. citizenship revoked.
Trump claimed, “I am seriously considering taking away her citizenship because Rosie O’Donnell does not serve the best interests of our great nation.” He furthered his point by labeling her a “threat to humanity” and suggested that if someone desired her presence, they should “remain in the wonderful country of Ireland.”
Responding to the President, O’Donnell launched a tirade on social media, stating, “I’m all you fear. Big women are strange women, telling the truth.” She seemed to criticize Americans and implied a call to action for those being taken advantage of.
Interestingly, although she lives thousands of miles away in Ireland, O’Donnell pointed out that she occupies a significant amount of Trump’s thoughts, as he seems unable to stop commenting on her.
It’s likely, though, that Trump was just trying to provoke with his post, as the U.S. government can’t simply strip citizenship from natural-born citizens. Attention is certainly being drawn to this situation.
Citizenship can be revoked only in specific situations, like treason or serving in enemy forces, not merely for disagreeing with the President.
Despite their past conflicts, DeGeneres expressed her support for O’Donnell, despite the ongoing issues that have spanned over two decades.
Earlier this year, O’Donnell hinted that she would like to mend their relationship, stating that she didn’t want to clash with another gay woman again. “We are very different people,” she remarked, wishing DeGeneres well despite their differences. She also emphasized the need for solidarity among gay comedians, expressing concern for the threats faced by the gay community.
