2025 National League All-Star Game Update
Atlanta – The excitement in Atlanta for the 2025 National League All-Star Game kicked off almost immediately. Arizona Diamondbacks’ second baseman, Ketel Marte, got things rolling with a double in the first inning. The National League quickly pulled ahead thanks to Mets infielder Pete Alonso, who hit his sixth three-run homer, making the score 6-0.
Things turned around for the American League in the following inning when Athletics outfielder Brent Rooker matched the score with a three-run homer of his own. Then, Bobby Witt Jr. made a solid fielder’s choice, bringing the score to 6-4.
Witt Jr. kept the momentum going in the top of the ninth with another double, bringing the AL within one run. Cleveland’s Stephen Kwan then managed a single, tying the game up at 6-6.
This tie meant that the game would head into a tiebreaker, a first for the midsummer classic. In a dramatic turn, Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber was named the All-Star Game MVP after leading the NL to victory during the home run derby-style tiebreaker.
Additionally, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the game. The automated ball strike system was tested early on, with Homerun Derby champion Callie successfully appealing a strikeout against fellow NL All-Star Tarik Scuball in the first inning.
Also noteworthy was Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson, who made history as the first batter to challenge a call, turning a 1-0 fastball from Washington’s Mackenzie Gore into a strike.
This computer umpire system had been trialed in the spring during training and has been in use at regular-season minor league games for several years now.
The MLB players will enjoy a break on Wednesday and Thursday, with the league set to resume on Friday.
