Investigation Underway for Missing Southern California Man

A significant investigation is ongoing in Southern California concerning a man who has been declared missing, with police describing him as a “suspected loss of failure.”

Authorities from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office are actively seeking information to locate 74-year-old Naiping Hou, a resident of Rancho Cucamonga.

His family reported him missing on May 4, 2025.

At the time of his disappearance, investigators uncovered “massive fraud” linked to Hou’s bank account.

Furthermore, it appears that unknown individuals have gained access to his cell phone, pretending to be him while communicating with family members.

This has led officials to suspect foul play.

According to Hou’s family, there may be a connection between his disappearance and his financial interests in the cryptocurrency sector. They are offering a $250,000 reward for information that could lead to his safe return.

“I miss him a lot,” said Wen Hou, Naiping’s child. “He’s always been a guiding figure in my life.”

Wen shared that his father had accumulated significant wealth through cryptocurrency investments and had previously donated $1.1 million to USC’s Keck School of Medicine for cardiology research. He suspects that someone has stolen his father’s identity, draining over $1 million from his account.

He also believes that the individual in question is impersonating his father and communicating with family members through deceptive text messages.

“It’s unsettling to think someone could mimic my dad through text,” Wen explained.

Wen thinks that the troubling events could have initiated back in January 2025, when his father was overseeing a renovation due to a significant leak.

“Nothing seemed off at that time. He was getting quotes from different contractors,” Wen recalled. “He was living in a temporary apartment covered by insurance, so he wasn’t very hands-on with the construction work.”

After the house was repaired in March, Naiping went on a fishing trip with Wen and friends, where everything appeared fine until circumstances shifted drastically.

“It felt really strange. The place was pristine—no people, no vehicles, no signs of life,” Wen said.

Later, the family discovered alarming news: a large sum of money was missing from Naiping’s accounts, totaling over $1 million.

“Funds had been used to buy gold online,” Wen detailed, adding that his father’s account was also exploited to purchase cryptocurrency and a significant gold bar. “He’s not particularly tech-savvy, so it’s puzzling how this could happen.”

“We’re genuinely worried and just want to bring my dad back,” he continued.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office is appealing to the public for assistance in locating Naiping Hou.

He is described as an Asian male, weighing approximately 170 pounds.

Wen noted that his father has dark hair, dark eyes, and a birthmark on his upper left shoulder.

Authorities are also looking for information regarding a silver Toyota Yaris that may be connected to his disappearance.

“A considerable amount of fraudulent activity has been detected in his bank accounts,” noted Sheriff’s Department spokesman Mara Rodriguez. “We’re deeply concerned for his well-being and are focused on safely bringing him home.”

According to a website dedicated to Naiping Hou’s search, he hails from China and is a semi-retired husband, father, and grandfather.

In his leisure time, he enjoys woodworking, playing ping pong at local recreation centers, and staying active in his community.

The Hou family is known for their strong commitment to hard work, family values, and philanthropy, actively contributing to education and public safety organizations.

Anyone with information regarding Naiping Hou is encouraged to reach out to Detective Vanays Kezada of the Specialist Investigation Department at (909) 890-4848.
