Concerns about Jewish safety increase as NYC mayoral candidate comes under examination

New York City is currently experiencing a significant rise in anti-Semitism, affecting Jewish residents at unprecedented levels of hatred and violence. This troubling trend raises important questions about the responsibilities of elected officials and candidates, including mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani, regarding their commitment to safeguarding the community.

Recent statistics paint a dire picture: New York State recorded a staggering 1,437 incidents of anti-Semitism in 2024, marking an 18% increase from the previous year. Even more alarming, the number of anti-Semitic assaults surged by 52% in that same timeframe, making up nearly a third of such incidents nationwide.

These aren’t just numbers. They represent actual people living in fear—like a 12-year-old being bullied at a Queens middle school or an Orthodox couple facing harassment in Brooklyn. Jewish students have found themselves trapped in libraries, facing hostile crowds banging on windows and yelling at them. It’s an unsettling environment for Jewish New Yorkers, affecting places of worship, educational institutions, and everyday public spaces.

The founder of Stop Antisemitism has warned that Mamdani might be detrimental to the safety of residents. The candidate’s past expressions and affiliations raise crucial concerns regarding his commitment to Jewish safety. During his time in school, Mamdani helped establish the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter at Boud-Inn University, which is known for its more extreme rhetoric. He even sponsored a bill dubbed the “Not Our Dime” law, aimed at restricting donations from New York charities to Israel under the accusation of funding war crimes—essential services like emergency medical response were included in this classification.

Furthermore, Mamdani’s reluctance to condemn inflammatory chants like “globalize the intifadas” suggests a troubling stance toward violence against Israel and Jewish communities. He has repeatedly been given opportunities to clarify his position, including during an interview with Meet the Press, but has chosen not to engage meaningfully.

This situation necessitates more than just a demand for clarity; mayoral candidates should articulate specific measures they will take to combat the rise of anti-Semitism and hatred. Given the current atmosphere, it’s critical for them to detail how they plan to protect Jewish New Yorkers and ensure their safety.

We need to pose some key questions to these candidates, expecting clear responses rather than vague reassurances:

  1. Will they commit to not appointing individuals with backgrounds of extremism or anti-Semitic sentiments to key positions? Mamdani’s associations, particularly with controversial figures like Linda Sarsour—known for her explicit anti-Semitism—raise concerns in this regard.
  2. Can they guarantee NYPD protection for all places of worship, including synagogues that display Israeli flags? Jewish institutions have faced numerous threats, and officials should protect all religious spaces regardless of their political affiliations.
  3. Will they ensure NYPD support for Jewish community events, such as fundraising for humanitarian causes related to Israel? The right to peaceful assembly and charitable contributions should be afforded the same protections as any other community initiative.
  4. Are they committed to ensuring that public school curricula do not propagate misinformation about the Middle East? Instances of harmful ethnic studies have emerged, often alienating Jewish students and replacing basic education with biased narratives.
  5. Will they ensure that city events only involve organizations without troubling backgrounds? This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of civic engagement.

These should not come across as unreasonable demands—they reflect essential expectations for public servants, shaped by their past actions and affiliations.

Moreover, it’s not just Mamdani at the forefront; numerous candidates are in the race. It’s important for all of them to align with the Jewish community and address these concerns seriously.

Anti-Semitism isn’t a distant issue; it’s a present and pressing threat to Jewish Americans. We’ve seen it manifest in various cities, including Washington, DC, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. So, with real acts of violence as the backdrop, New Yorkers need a mayor who can show not just sympathetic words but actionable plans to prevent anti-Semitism from taking root in the city.

Jewish residents and all New Yorkers who prioritize tolerance and safety deserve solid, transparent answers.
