‘A Bunch of Dead Robots:’ Frigid Chicago Temps Turn EV Charging Stations into ‘Car Graveyards’

Tesla owner Tyler Beard has experienced the challenges brought on by cold weather firsthand. He tried to charge his Tesla since Sunday afternoon, but he got frustrated and said: No juice. It's still zero percent. ” His charging issues stem from the effect subzero temperatures have on EV batteries, an issue Breitbart News has covered extensively in the past. From angry Tesla owners sharing videos of their cars failing to start to owners having to charge their cars as many as six times a day because battery performance has degraded so much, Tesla Cars don't survive winter in much of North America.

Beard's experience was not unique, as many other stations have faced similar problems at Oak Brook Station, resulting in long lines and abandoned vehicles. Charice Mizell, another Tesla owner who had to abandon her car and find alternative transportation, summed up the situation this way: This is a disaster. seriously. “

Another man explained the situation, saying, “There are a lot of dead robots here.'' The effects of the cold were more than just an inconvenience for some. When Kevin Samrak landed at O'Hare, he found his Tesla unresponsive and had to hire a flatbed tow truck to find him a working charging station.

Tesla did not respond to inquiries from FOX 32, but local auto expert Mark Bilek of the Chicago Automobile Trades Association commented: It's not plug and go. The battery must be preconditioned. This means the battery needs to be brought up to an optimal temperature to accept fast charging. ”
