Pope Leo XIV: A Chicagoan and Cubs Fan
Church leaders from the Archdiocese of Chicago have revealed that the newly elected Pope Leo XIV is not only a Cubs fan but also cherished by the first American popes.
The announcement of Leo XIV’s election took place on Thursday, marking a significant milestone as Chicago-born cardinal Robert Francis Prebust was appointed as the new head of the Catholic Church.
Now 69, Pope Leo XIV has ties to the Augustinians, a religious group within the Church. He was born in Chicago, attended Villanova University, and became a priest in 1982. He was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.
His past roles included serving as the governor of the Vatican Dicastelli and leading the Latin American Bible Committee for bishops.
Robert Prebust’s Journey
The Archdiocese celebrated the Pope’s election during a press conference on Thursday, where insights about Leo were shared.
Bishop Lawrence Sullivan, an auxiliary bishop of Chicago, remarked, “Pope Francis was a caretaker for those living on the fringes, and I believe Leo XIV will continue in that spirit.”
Sullivan emphasized that Leo brings multiple perspectives—being born in Chicago, being educated in America, and having experience serving in Peru.
He noted that Leo’s prior leadership in the Vatican gives him real-world understanding of the importance of aiding the poor and supporting those in need. Sullivan mentioned that Leo is “well-acquainted with the churches around the world.”
Mixed Reactions
In a notable response, former President Trump expressed that Pope Leo XIV’s election was a “great honor” for the United States. He emphasized that “God’s people extend beyond national borders,” implying that while Leo is connected to his roots, his mission encompasses all humanity.
However, Father Gregory Sakovic, president of Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral, pointed out that “you can never deny your roots,” suggesting Leo’s fondness for Chicago and America is integral to who he is.
Sakovic also humorously questioned whether Leo, being born in the city, supports the Chicago White Sox, although he confirmed, “I heard he’s a Cubs fan. Well, God bless him and all his fans.”
