Media Coverage of Supreme Court Criticized by Jan Crawford
Jan Crawford, CBS News’ chief legal correspondent, recently expressed her concerns regarding how the mainstream media is portraying the Supreme Court, labeling claims of its “corruption” as “dangerous.” She shared her thoughts during an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” where she discussed various topics that she believes are being overlooked in the news.
While some panelists identified extensive amnesty use and workforce reductions as significant issues, Crawford highlighted what she sees as excessive reporting on supposed political corruption tied to the Supreme Court. “There’s this theory out there that the Supreme Court is corrupt,” she noted, pointing to the fallout from the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, as well as its implications for former President Trump. “This narrative is not just overplayed; it’s simply false and undermines public trust in our legal system,” she added.
Crawford further elaborated on her viewpoint, stating that the Supreme Court has been predominantly conservative for the past two decades. “People can disagree with the decisions made, and that’s their prerogative, but labeling it as ‘corruption’ when it’s arguably a functioning court is misleading,” she remarked.
The correspondent emphasized that many people have a poor understanding of the judiciary’s role, particularly regarding its operation over the years. “These nine justices interpret the Constitution in varied ways; they don’t always see eye to eye. They’re engaged in significant debates about how best to interpret our laws, and that’s normal,” Crawford pointed out. Looking ahead to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, she stressed the importance of understanding the courts and the rule of law in maintaining a healthy democracy.
Crawford has previously criticized Senate Democrats, accusing them of attempting to weaken the Supreme Court’s legitimacy. She believes that such efforts, especially after the Dobbs decision, reflect a calculated move by the party to sway public opinion against the court. “The response was so intense that it prompted various exaggerated claims about court scandals,” she noted.
In light of these discussions, Crawford also mentioned the media’s failure to adequately address President Biden’s evident cognitive decline, placing it among the year’s most overlooked topics. The balance, or lack thereof, in media portrayals seems to perpetuate misunderstandings about key institutions.
