Secret Service Under Scrutiny After Alleged Smuggling Incident

A former Secret Service agent has suggested that the agency needs to make “course amendments” following an incident involving an agent attempting to bring his wife aboard a Secret Service freight plane with President Donald Trump on a trip to Scotland.

Tim Miller, who has experience working as a Secret Service Agent under Presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton, described the event as extraordinary. He noted that as threats to Trump escalate, the agency must “step up” its response. “The safety of the president is increasingly at risk,” Miller commented via email. “This agency needs to elevate its operations… Consider what it means for leaders to navigate critical global issues in an unsafe environment.”

He emphasized that the agency must recruit individuals with exceptional commitment, experience, and skills to fulfill their mission successfully.

Following an assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, it was noted that such incidents could lead to suspensions or firings of agents. Yet, there hadn’t been dismissals related to that case. Conversely, the Secret Service reported that it had stopped six agents in connection to that attempt.

Looking ahead, Miller anticipated a thorough investigation into the recent incident in Scotland. “I believe they will delve into this matter extensively,” he stated. He also highlighted the necessity for accountability within the agency, particularly given the heightened threats. “This is a critical time for heightened responsibility; the life of a leader hangs in the balance,” he added.

Miller acknowledged, however, that despite the serious misjudgment of one agent, the Secret Service did well in recognizing and addressing the situation. “Overall, except for this poor decision, the agency reacted appropriately,” he said.

RealClearPolitics initially reported on the agent’s attempt to smuggle his wife during Trump’s visit to Scotland, an allegation Trump remarked on during a press conference. He described the situation as “strange” and mentioned that the agency is managing the issue. “I just heard about it. That’s odd. I think Sean is taking care of it… Is that serious?” Trump responded when questioned by reporters.

According to the White House, Trump was briefed on the matter, and an investigation is currently underway. A Secret Service spokesperson clarified that an internal investigation is active after an employee tried to bring a spouse aboard a mission support flight. They reiterated that prior warnings had been issued to employees prohibiting such actions, and mentioned that it did not interfere with any overseas security operations.
