Homeless Man Rescues Young Boy in Miami
A homeless man in Miami played a crucial role in rescuing a 6-year-old boy who was discovered wandering alone late at night. Arnett Johnson, who had been sleeping on a bench in the Allapattah neighborhood, noticed the child while he was resting around 11 p.m. on April 8.
Having spent six months in the area after his release from prison, Johnson said he immediately began searching for the boy’s parents before opting to contact the police. “I looked around and didn’t see anyone. So, what was this kid doing out here at night?” he reflected. He waited with the child until the police arrived, expressing that he felt guided to be there: “God sent me there, so I had to do what God said.”
In his comments, Johnson mentioned, “Anyone would have done what I did,” a sentiment echoed by Miami Police Officer Mike Vega, who highlighted Johnson’s actions as that of a “Good Samaritan.” Vega praised him for stepping in, noting the potential consequences if he hadn’t.
Following the incident, police revealed that the boy had told them, “Mommy dropped me off and left me.” However, due to a language delay, they faced challenges gathering more details. An officer from the Miami-Dade School Police Department was later able to identify the child after noticing a flyer that required identification.
Law enforcement reached out to a witness who knew the child and her mother, Annie Rivera, 30. The witness revealed that Rivera and her child had recently moved in with her family. After going to bed around 9:30 p.m., the woman discovered Rivera and the boy were missing.
The witness reported hearing a door open in the night, assuming it was Rivera returning, and fell back asleep. The next morning, another witness asked Rivera about her son’s whereabouts, to which she responded she wasn’t sure and thought he was at his godfather’s house.
As a result, police arrested Rivera on charges of child neglect, estimating that the boy had been missing for about 12 hours. She appeared in court on April 10, where the judge set her bail at $2,500, and she has remained in custody since. The child is currently in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
The Miami Police Department has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the case.
