Mehcad Brooks Reflects on James Van Der Beek’s Final Days
Mehcad Brooks, a close friend of James Van Der Beek, has shared a heartfelt glimpse into how the actor faced his final moments. Reflecting on this experience, Brooks mentioned, “One of the greatest honors of my life was being a part of it. Every day for the next four or five days, I held his hand, prayed with him, told him jokes, and sang to him,” as he described in an Instagram video.
Brooks, 45, noted how Van Der Beek approached death with remarkable composure. “He handled transition like a king,” he remarked, clearly moved by the experience.
In the same breath, Brooks expressed how Van Der Beek’s passing served as a powerful reminder to cherish life. “Live your life and do what makes you happy,” he advised, adding that the opinions of others should be brushed aside. “Everything you’re worried about right now doesn’t matter.” Sometimes, we all need that little nudge to remember what’s truly significant.
He continued with an emotional farewell, encouraging everyone to value their loved ones: “I love you so much, brother. Hold your family tight. Love your life. Let life love you back. Laugh when you can. Understand what’s important, embrace it, and hold on tight.” His final words were poignant and supportive as he honored his late friend, writing, “Rest in peace, brother King.”
Van Der Beek passed away on Wednesday after a brave fight with colorectal cancer, leaving behind a legacy at just 48 years old.
In a touching social media post, Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, shared that he had “passed away peacefully,” emphasizing his courage during his last days. “He has so much to share about his wishes, his love for humanity, and the sanctity of time. That day will come,” she added, requesting privacy as they grieve their loss.
Friends of the family have come together to set up a GoFundMe to assist Kimberly and their six children with living expenses during this difficult time, raising over $1.2 million so far. James had been dealing with stage 3 cancer since August 2023 and had even auctioned some “Dawson’s Creek” memorabilia to help cover treatment costs.
