An EVA Air passenger caused quite a stir on a recent flight from Taiwan by using a drinking glass to scratch his head while seated. This unusual grooming behavior was filmed by another traveler on September 24.

Onboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the man seemed to think that the glass rim was the perfect tool for relieving an itchy scalp. A nearby passenger, horrified by the sight, reported the incident to the news outlet Viral Press.

Watching the man repeatedly drag the cup across his hair and scalp left the observer feeling that the luxury of the business class experience had taken an unexpected, not-so-pleasant turn.

“This is disgusting. It’s a cup, not a massage comb,” the onlooker exclaimed.

The individual capturing the moment felt completely put off, sharing, “No one wants to eat your dandruff. I’m really going to vomit,” according to reports.

Fortunately, the EVA Air flight landed safely. The airline, established in 1989, remains a prominent player in the industry.

Texas-based etiquette expert Diane Gottsman weighed in on the bizarre scenario, stating, “using a glass to scratch [one’s] head is completely inappropriate,” especially in a public setting. She added, “Any time you see someone scratching themselves with an object, or even with their fingers in a public area — it’s unappealing and somewhat alarming.”

In recent times, there have been increasing complaints from passengers regarding public behavior on planes. For instance, just last year, a traveler received backlash for putting their feet up on a window.

Notably, a Reddit user expressed their frustration over witnessing fellow passengers encroaching on personal space during flights, recalling an incident where someone placed their feet on their armrest and later up on the window, which is notoriously close quarters. They noted exasperatedly, “It’s a 4.5 hour flight.”

Gottsman concluded, “When you’re in your home, you are in a private space. But when you are out in public, there are different standards because you are around other people and must be aware of your surroundings and the comfort level of others.”
