(Nexstar) – Ideally, the city where you live should feel like home. It should provide a sense of comfort and safety during your daily activities.
Yet, achieving that feeling can be a bit tricky, especially in some of the biggest cities across the U.S.
Some cities definitely have better safety records than others. A recent analysis by SmartAsset aimed to identify which major U.S. cities stand out as the safest.
To do this, SmartAsset compared the 50 largest cities by population, examining various factors such as rates of violent crime, property crime, vehicle deaths, and a range of other statistics.
Coming in first is San Jose, California, located on the west coast. This city performed well across all metrics analyzed, landing third in violent crime rates relative to its population and fifth in property crime rates.
Los Angeles, just five hours south, ranks as the second safest city. It also showed impressive results in crime statistics, with a notably lower vehicle mortality rate compared to San Jose.
Three cities from Texas made it into the top 10 as well: Fort Worth ranked third, Arlington seventh, and El Paso eighth. Each of these cities has a lower percentage of adults who engage in excessive drinking compared to others in the top 10, with the exception of San Jose.
