Stunning Verdict in Kidnapping Case
This year, Victoria Cox, a 34-year-old mother of three, confessed to second-degree murder and kidnapping. She admitted her role in the abduction of two of her children, assisting a friend whose name is Daniel Callihan, a 38-year-old from Amite, Louisiana.
On June 12, 2024, Callihan brutally stabbed Callie Brunette, a mother of two, more than 50 times in her Louisiana home, before taking her daughters, aged 4 and 6. He even stole Brunette’s car, placing the children inside, and then drove to Amite, where he met up with Cox.
Authorities eventually tracked the girls to a site in Jackson, Mississippi. Here, they discovered the body of a 4-year-old girl in a pit the day after the girls went missing. The Jackson Police Chief described the scene as “sickening” and mentioned finding a “small cage” that hinted at possible human trafficking.
Fortunately, the 6-year-old sister was found alive and quickly taken to the hospital, later being reunited with her family.
After his apprehension, Callihan confessed to murdering Brunette and kidnapping her girls. Reports indicated he also admitted to suffocating the 4-year-old girl before her tragic discovery.
During sentencing, U.S. District Judge Lance M. Africk imposed consecutive life sentences on Callihan for charges related to kidnapping and transporting a minor. The court labeled Cox as Callihan’s accomplice.
In an unsettling twist, while it was found that Callihan sexually assaulted the 6-year-old, the associated charges were eventually dropped. Cox’s three children, aged 6, 8, and 9, added complexity to her case. Judge Winston Kidd expressed disbelief that a mother could engage in such heinous acts against children.
Cox responded to the judge’s questions about her motives, stating that she struggled to understand her actions. She claimed Callihan pressured her into drug use on the day of the kidnapping and insisted she didn’t know he had no permission to take the children.
Amidst pleas for a plea deal, Cox expressed remorse, stating, “If I could change everything I would, but I can’t.” During her hearing, it was noted that the district attorney had never seen such a case before, highlighting the horrific nature of the crime.
Ultimately, Judge Kidd sentenced Cox to 40 years for murder and 25 years for kidnapping, with both sentences running concurrently. There was a possibility on the table for a death sentence initially.
Authorities haven’t commented further on the matter, leaving some questions lingering in the minds of those following this tragic story.
