A Sixth Family from Minnesota’s Somali Community Set to Plead Guilty in Fraud Scandal

A sixth family member from Minnesota’s Somali community is likely to plead guilty in the extensive “Feeding Our Future” fraud case that has gained nationwide attention.

Ghandi Mohamed is reportedly now facing charges as part of a broader investigation that began over two years ago with a 47-count indictment.

According to Minneapolis Fox 9, the indictment also involved Ghandi’s brother Suleman Mohamed, sister Ikram Mohamed, mother Fadmo Yusuf, sister Aisha Hussein, Ikram’s husband Shakur Abdisalam, and Ikram’s friend Sahara Osman, who is the sole unrelated defendant.

Prosecutors assert that the organization claimed to provide millions of meals under the Feeding Our Future initiative, ultimately garnering $14 million from federal child nutrition programs.

Attorney General Keith Ellison is at the heart of this controversy. He met with families back in 2021 to advocate for increased funding while also promoting political candidates who aligned with their interests.

During a community meeting, one member emphasized, “The only way to protect what we have is to throw ourselves into the political arena. Cast our votes where they’re needed. But, most importantly, support candidates who fight for our interests.” This member urged Ellison to take action.

However, Ellison has insisted he was unaware of any wrongdoing, stating, “I did nothing for them and received nothing from them.”

On the other hand, the House Oversight Committee has alleged that both Ellison and Governor Tim Walz were aware of the notable fraud within state-funded welfare programs but failed to address the issue, instead pursuing whistleblowers who spoke out.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer noted in a statement, “Testimony obtained by the committee shows that Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison recognized widespread fraud in social services programs, but lied about their knowledge and retaliated against those who raised concerns.” He accused them of facilitating significant taxpayer losses while neglecting state employees’ accountability.

President Donald Trump also suggested that the Biden administration was aware of this fraud but chose not to intervene.
