A taxpayer leaves California every minute under Newsom's leadership.

Under Governor Gavin Newsom’s leadership, California is reportedly losing a taxpayer roughly every minute. Recent analysis from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, based on IRS data, suggests that states like Florida, Texas, and North Carolina are attracting new taxpayers at a significantly quicker pace than the national average.

This concerning trend was highlighted just as additional data underscored a troubling migration pattern from high-tax blue states to low-tax red states, emphasizing a substantial shift in wealth.

Many Americans seem to prefer the absence of a state income tax in Florida, often referred to as the Sunshine State, over California’s so-called “sunshine tax.” The challenges in California—increasing crime rates, high costs of living, steep property taxes, and a progressive income tax that can reach as high as 13.3%—are burdensome for many, particularly affecting the middle and upper classes.

Moreover, recent reports indicate that around 158,700 workers in California have been impacted by layoffs, placing the state second in job losses nationwide.

According to Andrew Wilford, who directs the Interstate Commerce Initiative for the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, the migration could contribute an additional $4 billion annually to Florida’s budget.

The rapid loss of residents from California is alarming and serves as a stark critique of certain policies emanating from Sacramento.

Critics have long predicted that California’s tax policies could lead to long-term consequences, and the current statistics seem to support those concerns. If this trend continues, the state risks not just a loss of residents but also a significant decline in funding for essential public services such as education and healthcare, including Medi-Cal.

The message seems apparent: Americans are seeking opportunities, security, and the ability to retain their hard-earned income. Without a change in direction from Newsom, some are left wondering if the only thing left to grow in California will be thoughts of secession.
