Jennifer Siebel Newsom, California’s first partner, opened up about her childhood during a candid softball interview with Marie Claire, sharing the poignant story behind her cherished pet chicken.
The interview, titled “Is Jennifer Siebel Newsom the most underrated woman in American politics?” highlights her journey as a filmmaker and her marriage to Governor Gavin Newsom, who is anticipated to launch a presidential campaign in 2028.
Amid these discussions, Newsom shared a personal tragedy from her youth that inspired the name of her chicken.
When she was nearing her seventh birthday, her younger sister, Stacey, tragically died in a golf cart accident during a family vacation in Hawaii.
“I think my parents were experiencing a lot of pain,” she said in the interview. “And they couldn’t really be there for me.”
To help her manage the grief from her sister’s passing, her parents gifted her a white pony named Sugar along with a trainer who encouraged her to leap over hay bales and become more daring.
Newsom named her fluffy white chicken “Sugar” as a tribute to the pony that helped her navigate through those challenging moments in her early years.
The article features several photos of her dressed in a black coat, tenderly holding the chicken, and another image where she gazes affectionately at it outside their chicken coop.
This positive portrayal in Marie Claire contrasts sharply with a recent critical expose in Vogue about the Democratic governor, which largely supported her without offering detailed insights.
Vogue’s approach resembles what happened in 2024 when former President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and then-Vice President Kamala Harris was positioned as a top contender.
Shortly after, various publications, including Vogue and Time, flooded the media with glowing articles that glorified Harris’s experience, hinting she was the ideal leader following a tumultuous four-year Biden administration.
