A White Sox fan criticizes the team in their obituary

Chicago White Sox Fan Passes Away with a Final Remark

Last month, a devoted Chicago White Sox fan, John Bernard McDonald, passed away at the age of 77. His obituary hinted at a playful jab at the team even after his death.

McDonald, from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, died on April 23 after a brief illness, according to his obituary. A photo accompanying the obituary shows him proudly wearing a White Sox jersey. Still, given the team’s rough performance, particularly last season’s record loss and a tough start to this one, it offered a tongue-in-cheek reminder: “He couldn’t face another White Sox season after last year’s record-breaking meltdown.”

In a reflection of his life, McDonald shared his interests: “I enjoyed golf, watched TV, went to sleep, and played Chicago sports—except for the Cubs. He really disliked the Cubs.” Last year’s performance was notably disappointing, with the team recording 121 losses, the highest in Major League Baseball history.

As the current season unfolded, the White Sox found themselves struggling, sitting at 10-28 after an error-laden game against the Kansas City Royals that resulted in a painful last-minute loss.

Chicago currently holds a record of 10-29, placing them with a .256 win rate. It’s a sharp decline from not long ago when the team won the AL Central title in 2021. McDonald, thankfully, witnessed the team’s championship victory in 2005, a high point in a long history that has often tested fans’ loyalty.
