Dana Free’s Journey into Spiritual Warfare

Dana Free has published a book titled What Every Christian Needs to Know About Spiritual Wars, which presents a practical and biblical perspective on battling the devil’s influence.

Her writing journey, however, wasn’t easy. In a recent segment of “A Strange Encounter,” Rick Burgess interviewed Dana to explore the intense circumstances that led her to write this book.

Dana’s upbringing instilled in her a solid understanding of the Holy Spirit’s power. Yet, marriage opened a new realm of spiritual challenges that she wasn’t prepared for. Initially, she found herself navigating the complexities of her husband’s addiction, viewing the marriage as a sort of binding contract rather than purely romantic. She sought help and found resources that guided her on how to spiritually resist the turmoil she faced.

She came to understand her husband’s drug addiction wasn’t just a physical problem; it was deeply rooted in mental health issues—often manifesting as feelings of abandonment, rejection, or depression. “The enemy uses addiction as a tool to bind and ruin lives,” she explains.

As Dana began to stand firm and utilize her spiritual tools, the challenges intensified. “The enemy was not pleased with my efforts to address these ingrained issues, and they pushed back hard to get me to walk away from my husband,” she recalls. “I felt like I faced everything imaginable against our marriage.”

During her struggles, Rick asked if she had ever confronted demons directly. Dana noted that while she hadn’t witnessed physical forms of evil per se, she had experienced disturbing spiritual attacks. One incident involved a manipulative spirit at her home that violently restrained her, preventing her from speaking out against it. Only when she called on Jesus’s name did the situation shift, although her husband initially doubted her experience. Later, the spirit targeted him with similar force.

Many Christians, Dana argues, mistakenly view witchcraft and spells as mere fantasy, failing to acknowledge their reality. “Just as God’s power is real, so too are the dark forces at work,” she asserts.

She warns that spiritual gifts can be misrepresented: “New Age practices, such as using crystals, meditative yoga, and the ‘third eye’ concept, draw people in without them realizing the risks.” She emphasizes that young people, in particular, should be cautious as these practices can inadvertently open doors for the enemy.

In Dana’s view, a significant barrier for believers in navigating these spiritual battles is ignorance. “This is why I wrote the book,” she states. “When I talk to the average Christian, I often find they simply don’t know enough.”
