Yankees’ Approach to Devin Williams

In Arlington, Texas, the Yankees are facing challenges with Devin Williams but aren’t planning to distance themselves from him. Aaron Boone mentioned on Wednesday that the team needs to “keep him running.”

Perhaps Boone is looking for some less intense situations for Williams to regain his footing, but he’s also clear that they won’t be hiding him. “It’s similar to getting off to a rough start this season,” Boone expressed before a dramatic 3-2 victory at Globe Life Field. “He has the ability, and hopefully, we’ll push through this rough patch.”

The organization sees potential in Williams, envisioning a strong bullpen if everything falls into place. However, things haven’t gone smoothly for him lately, as he has allowed runs in six of his last eight appearances, posting a troubling 9.39 ERA in that span. It’s reminiscent of his shaky start to the season when he had an ERA of 11.25 in his first ten games.

In contrast, during a better stretch, Williams managed a 2.63 ERA over 29 games. Boone remains optimistic, saying, “I think he has the potential to be very successful wherever he pitches, provided he performs up to his capabilities.” He emphasized the importance of bringing in players with closing experience after the trade deadline to set up a supportive environment for success.

“Everyone needs to contribute and get the job done.”

Volpe vs. Reiter Round Two

Switching gears, the second matchup between Anthony Volpe and Jack Reiter favored the Yankees shortstop. In a friendly rivalry with a former teammate from Delburton School, Volpe delivered an RBI single that tied the game in the fourth inning.

Later, Volpe and Jasson Domínguez executed a double steal during Reiter’s last at-bat, which led to an additional run, bolstered by an error from former Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka. It’s worth noting that Volpe faced off against Leiter last season, going 1-2 against him.

Mark Reiter Jr.’s Performance

Writer’s cousin, Mark Reiter Jr., also contributed to the Yankees’ win with a scoreless inning of relief.

Injury Updates

On a different note, Fernando Cruz (Axis Co.) completed his first full bullpen session on Monday, progressing towards live batting practice, scheduled for Sunday. Meanwhile, Ryan Yarbra (Diameter Strike) is set to throw his first live session soon, aiming for a 30-35 pitch count as he works towards rejoining the team, either in relief or to re-enter the starting rotation.
