Yankees Seek Defensive Strength by Acquiring Ryan McMahon
Just two days after Aaron Boone highlighted the Yankees’ need to bolster their defense, they made a significant move by trading for Ryan McMahon from the Rockies to shore up the third base position. This change comes as the Yankees look to gain more consistency in the field.
One big area of concern is shortstop Anthony Volpe, who headed into their series against the Phillies tied for the MLB lead with 13 errors. Boone expressed hope for improvement, stating, “We aim to make defense one of our strong points now, especially with McMahon joining us and working alongside Anthony.”
Reflecting on recent struggles, Boone noted the team’s overall performance was underwhelming against the Blue Jays earlier in the week. “I believe we have solid defenders on the team. Our last series didn’t go as planned, and the final game doesn’t reflect our best effort,” he said. “But we must acknowledge setbacks and focus on what can be improved moving forward.”
The Yankees are facing a challenging moment, highlighted by their 52 errors as they entered this weekend’s games, ranking them ninth in the league. Boone emphasized the importance of bouncing back and embracing the hard work needed to transform their defensive play. “With dedication, there’s no reason why we can’t become a consistently strong defensive team like we’ve shown for much of this season,” he added.
In the same breath, Boone mentioned outfielder Jackson Dominguez, who has also been facing difficulties. He recently recorded one of the four errors during their Wednesday game and had some missteps against the Mets as well. “He’s made progress, but mistakes can happen, even to the best players,” Boone noted. “I think Dominguez has improved significantly since last year and during spring training. He’s certainly putting in the effort, and it shows.”
