Aaron Gunches executed in Arizona following 2008 first-degree murder conviction

The Arizona man was executed in 2008 following his first-degree murder conviction.

Aaron Ganch, 53, was declared dead after receiving a lethal injection at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence at 10:33am on Wednesday. Ganch pleaded guilty to the fatal shooting of his girlfriend's ex-husband Ted Price in 2002 in the desert outside the Phoenix suburbs of Mesa.

“The process went according to the plan without incident,” Arizona Department of Corrections (ADCRR) Deputy Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADCRR) said at a media conference after its release.

Barcello said Gunches did not “have any kind of resistance.” When asked if the death row inmate had a final word, Barcelo said Junchi shook his head “No.”

Gunches' final meal included a double western bacon cheeseburger with fries, a spicy gyro, a barbecue gyro, onion rings and baklava. He did not choose to have a spiritual advisor with him during the enforcement process.

According to ADCRR, Gunches sued his death sentence in 2016, but the statement said “the Arizona Supreme Court upheld the conviction.”

Gunches' first run in the state in over two years. He was the first to be executed in a state where Democrats are governor since Virginia did that in 2017, when Terry McAuliffe was in charge of the state, according to the Associated Press.

Gunches' execution was originally scheduled for April 2023, but was stopped after Democratic government Katie Hobbs ordered a review of the state's death penalty proceedings.

Late last year, Hobbs fired a retired judge appointed to carry out the review, and the state Department of Corrections announced changes to the team that fatally injects death row inmates.

“The department is confident in both the quality and quantity of pentobarbital supply,” Adcr said in a statement.

“At the beginning of this year, appropriate testing was conducted, including quantitative chemical analysis provided to Ganchi, confirming sufficient concentrations of pentobarbital in the combined solution. Additionally, sterilization testing with the formulated pentobarbital was completed earlier this year, providing validation of the drug beyond the date of use.
