Yankees Rally to Secure Comeback Win Against Mariners
The Yankees managed to sidestep a potential shutout, and even went beyond that.
After Brian Woo held them hitless for seven innings and they trailed by five runs, the Yankees found their rhythm and clinched a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Mariners in ten innings, completing a sweep on Thursday night.
They ignited their offense in the eighth inning, beginning with Jazz Chisholm Jr. breaking Woo’s no-hit attempt with a leadoff single. They eventually tied the game in the ninth with a two-run single, much to the delight of the Yankee Stadium crowd, thanks to Austin Wells’ contribution with two singles.
Aaron Judge came through in the clutch, delivering a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth. Anthony Volpe sprinted home and barely avoided the tag after a strong throw from center fielder Julio Rodriguez.
The celebration was briefly put on hold as the Mariners attempted to challenge the play, but it was soon confirmed that the Yankees had indeed won.
This victory marked the Yankees’ fourth win, bringing their season record to 52-41, and improving their extra-inning record to 2-6, with both wins at home.
Devin Williams pitched a flawless top of the tenth, setting the stage for the Yankees’ chance to win in the bottom half.
Oswald Peraza stepped up after Giancarlo Stanton’s pinch hit to drive home Jorvitt Vivas, attempting a bunt but instead making a daring dash to third for the first out.
Paul Goldschmidt then came in as a pinch hitter against left-hander Gabe Spaire, but the Mariners chose to walk him intentionally.
This put Trent Grisham at bat, and he worked a full count resulting in a walk that loaded the bases for Judge.
Woo had dominated the Yankees through seven innings, almost adding to the franchise’s history of no-hitters before Chisholm’s hit in the eighth broke the silence for the Yankees.
Ben Rice added to the rally with a solid single. Wells then put the Yankees on the board with a sacrifice fly, making the score 5-1.
With Volpe facing new reliever Matt Brash, Stanton made things interesting by hitting a two-run homer, marking his first career pinch-hit home run with his 58th appearance in that role, bringing the score to 5-3.
In the ninth, the Yankees loaded the bases off singles from Grisham and Cody Bellinger, alongside a walk from Rice.
Wells, with his final chance, made an impactful single, leading the charge to tie the game at five.
