Texas School Choice Program Sees Over 100,000 Applications
Since the launch of Texas School Choice, more than 100,000 students have applied—a rollout that Governor Greg Abbott has dubbed “the biggest and best school choice rollout in the history of the United States.”
Abbott, speaking with Blaze Media co-founders, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This is a really big change for education in our state. One thing about school choice is that it creates competition between schools.” He expressed hope that this model could inspire similar programs nationwide.
He explained, “What we want is competition in public education, private education, and home education, and when that happens we will have a better educational product for every child in Texas.” He also suggested that if Texas proves successful, it could lead to a transformation in education throughout the country.
There’s ongoing discussion regarding who stands to benefit most from this new program. Glenn questioned whether it would primarily help wealthier families, to which Abbott humorously responded that these are merely “teachers’ union talking points.” He clarified that Texas offers three tiers of school choice based on income, with applicants currently evenly distributed across these levels.
Amidst curiosity about how this initiative fosters competition among public schools, Abbott elaborated, “In Texas, public schools have a monopoly on children’s education, and we haven’t had to get up every day and figure out how to compete and provide a better educational product for our kids.” He believes this shift forced by this program will compel schools to focus on delivering quality education, which ultimately benefits the students.
