Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that his interview with ABC News host George Stephanopoulos didn’t answer all of voters’ questions following President Joe Biden’s debate performance.
“Voters have questions, and I personally love Joe Biden. I’m not sure that Friday night’s interview adequately answered those questions. So I think this is going to be a crucial week. I think the president needs to do more. I’m not advising the campaign, but if I was, I would probably suggest the president go out and hold town hall meetings, hold press conferences and show the people that he’s still the old Joe Biden and one of the best retail politicians this country has ever had. The president says he can do that. I believe he can. I think this is going to be a crucial week for the president to answer any remaining questions. And quite frankly, I think there are still questions lingering in the minds of a lot of voters,” Murphy said.
He added, “Well, I’m not sure what those tests contain or whether the measurements will be impactful to voters who have questions. I think it’s much more important for the president to have unscripted conversations with voters this week and show that he’s still the old Joe Biden. I think that’s a much more effective way to answer people’s questions than a medical test that will determine the president’s course going forward. But again, I don’t think this week can be business as usual. I don’t think Friday night’s interview answered all of the questions that people in my state have. They want to believe that he’s still the old Joe Biden, but they need to see more from the president and I hope we’ll see that.”
