ABC Interview Showed Biden in ‘Denial’ About ‘Decline’

Julián Castro, a former secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration, said Friday on MSNBC’s “The Last Word” that an interview with ABC News host George Stephanopoulos showed President Joe Biden in denial about his own decline.

“I think it’s fair to say he certainly looked calmer than I saw him at the debate and than I saw him at the rally this afternoon before this interview today,” Castro said. “At the same time, my overwhelming impression from this is that the president is basically in denial, in denial of the decline that people are clearly seeing. People have asked him, have you declined in the last three and a half years since you took office, and he seems to be saying no, in denial of the polls, in denial of how far behind he is in battleground states, how far behind he is, in denial of the calls for him to step down.”

He added, “When asked how he would feel if he lost to Trump, President Biden said, ‘If I give it my all, I’ll be OK.’ That’s not good enough for the American people. That’s not good enough given the stakes that Donald Trump will win. What the American people want is confidence that whoever the Democrats put up is going to win this election. So I think he did better tonight, but he’s still got a long way to go.”
