ABC News Anchor Jonathan Karl questioned Trump’s border official Tom Homan regarding whether President Trump thinks he can secure the release of El Salvador President Nayib Bukele from detention.
In a segment “this week” on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday, Homan conceded that the Supreme Court had instructed the Trump administration to “facilitate” Garcia’s return from Salvador’s detention to the United States.
Homan further stated, however, that Abrego Garcia “is a citizen of El Salvador, so the country needs to collaborate in this matter.”
Karl challenged this assertion, implying to Homan that he could compel Trump to act if he could have Bukele cooperate.
“But you mentioned El Salvador needs to collaborate. If President Trump wanted him back, you question whether he could persuade President Bukele to send him back, correct?” Karl probed. “I mean, President Trump was capable of making this happen.”
Responding to the ABC anchor, Homan said, “I’m not part of those discussions. I can’t address things I’m not informed about.”
“We cannot comment on any negotiations we’re not privy to,” Homan added.
The anchor pressed further.
“I’m yes, I’m not at liberty to discuss any conversations I’m not part of. I’m unaware of the discussions… who’s engaged in what talks and which officials are involved.”
The Trump administration echoes Homan’s viewpoint, indicating that Abrego Garcia is under Salvadoran control, so they cannot compel El Salvador to take any specific steps. The Trump administration has established an agreement with the Salvadoran administration to provide millions annually to manage deported individuals, comprising gang affiliates, in the notorious prison system.
