Abdul El-Sayed encounters criticism for his 9/11 post and connections to Hasan Piker

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, faced criticism on social media for his 9/11 message shared on his X account. He stated, “They didn’t just attack America that day; they attacked the idea of America,” elaborating on the concept of a nation unified by ideals, where freedom and justice bind citizens, even amidst challenges. El-Sayed, describing the day, emphasized remembering the lives lost in that tragic act of terror.

Some users quickly brought up El-Sayed’s connection with Hasan Piker, a progressive streamer known for controversial statements, including one where he implied that America deserved the 9/11 attacks. A conservative account on X, Libs of TikTok, called him a “fraud” in response to his statement. Political commentator Steve Guest also criticized him, sharing a photo of El-Sayed and Piker, and referencing one of Piker’s more inflammatory quotes about America.

GOP consultant Ryan Girdusky expressed disdain for El-Sayed’s associations, suggesting that having a spokesperson who made such remarks reflects poorly on him. National Republican Senatorial Committee communications director Joanna Rodriguez echoed similar sentiments, accusing El-Sayed of failing to disavow Piker’s controversial views and belittling American lives lost over the years.

The backlash extended to various right-leaning figures. Joey Mannarino, a co-founder of a right-wing media group, voiced disbelief at El-Sayed’s rising support, labeling him a radical extremist influenced by his associations. In contrast, El-Sayed has previously claimed that he does not share all of Piker’s views, asserting, “Nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokesperson.”

Chuck Ross, an investigative journalist, noted that El-Sayed’s latest post about 9/11 deviated from his typical narrative, which often includes commentary on the subsequent wars stemming from the attacks. El-Sayed has previously criticized military actions in the context of discussing 9/11, particularly when commenting on ongoing violence in conflict areas.

Despite the controversies, El-Sayed’s campaign did not address why he had not made more explicit efforts to distance himself from Piker’s remarks.
