Michigan Senate Hopeful’s Controversial Connections

WASHINGTON — Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate for the Michigan Senate, reportedly reached out to his friend, Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, asking him to soften his rhetoric as the midterm elections approach.

According to two sources, El-Sayed expressed concerns to Piker that the streamer’s comments were negatively impacting his campaign and potentially costing him votes.

During his primary race against Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), El-Sayed had openly associated with Piker, even attending a pool party together just before the election.

When questioned about Piker, El-Sayed downplayed the connection, stating, “This campaign was never about a streamer in California,” emphasizing his usual phrasing in response to criticism of Piker.

Piker, who once suggested that “America deserved 9/11” before later retracting that statement, has been known for making radical statements. His commentary often leans far-left, adding layers of controversy.

One notable incident involved him hanging a front-page news article about the September 11 attacks on his streaming wall, which undoubtedly raised eyebrows.

Moreover, Piker has expressed admiration for Mao Zedong and made inflammatory remarks about the political climate, including praising those who harmed Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) and linking recent events to historical actions by Israel.

El-Sayed has been under scrutiny from various Democratic leaders regarding his relationship with Piker, with many advising that the association could harm his candidacy.

Neera Tanden, the head of the Center for American Progress, reflected this sentiment on social media, noting El-Sayed’s newfound distance from Piker after campaigning alongside him previously.

Recently, Piker stirred further unease within the Democratic party by participating in interviews, which many strategists believed could provide ammunition for Republican opponents.

Piker has made statements that claim the U.S. has committed acts of terrorism that rival those of Al Qaeda, complicating El-Sayed’s positioning in a tightly contested race.

Currently, El-Sayed holds a narrow lead against Mike Rogers, with recent polling showing him up by 3.2 percentage points.

Additionally, reports indicate that El-Sayed’s campaign faces challenges in engaging black voters. One community leader expressed frustration over feeling overlooked by El-Sayed’s team, suggesting that the campaign might not be prioritizing outreach to this demographic adequately.

This leader felt so undervalued that they decided to engage with Rogers’ team instead, indicating a significant disconnect that could influence support.
