Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Tuesday on CNN’s “The Situation Room” that there is “no way at all” that the Biden administration could have avoided a chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. “It’s unrealistic,” he said.
Moderator Wolf Blitzer said, “Senator, what responsibility do you think the Biden administration bears for what happened?”
“Therefore, it is simply impossible to believe that we can withdraw American troops, Americans, and American friends in the face of an unplanned, unexpected collapse of the Afghan government and Afghan army overnight,” Murphy said. I think it’s unrealistic.” In an orderly manner. I cry when I see that retreat scene. I still grieve for the Americans we lost. But after the Afghan government abandoned the post virtually overnight, there was no way to carry out a withdrawal without some degree of disruption. So I think the president made the right decision. I think most of my constituents agree that the United States would be better off not still mired in Afghanistan. ”
He added: “While there are certainly things that could have been better, the belief held by many of the president’s critics is that with a few policy tweaks here and there, everything could be done without cooperation from the Afghan government.” They believe they should have been able to evacuate their assets in an orderly manner.” I just think that’s unrealistic. ”
