Miami Hurricanes: A Season of High Expectations

As the 2026 ACC Media Days kick off, there’s a prevailing question: can anyone challenge the Miami Hurricanes this season?

There’s a strong sense that this year’s squad possesses more talent, having come surprisingly close to winning the national championship, just short of an interception from Carson Beck.

While games are yet to be played and fall training hasn’t begun, many in the conference and national media are confident that Miami will make a significant impact in 2026.

The buzz online around the ESPN FPI rankings has missed a key detail.

It’s interesting to point out that the Hurricanes haven’t clinched an ACC Championship since joining over two decades ago. However, with head coach Mario Cristobal amassing a talented roster and coaching staff, perhaps this could finally be the year they break that streak.

Miami is bringing back a wealth of playmakers, both from their own ranks and via transfers. Talents like Malachi Toney, Mark Fletcher Jr., and Cooper Burkett are set to give offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson various options.

Darian Mensah, who transferred in from Duke, will be taking snaps. While he may seem like an outsider to some, I honestly believe he’s the most skilled quarterback I’ve seen Cristobal coach during his time in Miami.

Curt Cignetti was so dedicated this offseason that he turned down all outside distractions: “I’m 95 percent focused on football.”

Sure, Carson Beck is a well-respected NFL quarterback who has excelled at two schools, and Cam Ward had a unanimous selection as the top draft pick among All-Americans. But, Mensah seems capable of seamlessly running Dawson’s offense. He has an impressive array of wide receivers and running backs at his disposal.

Still, there are concerns, particularly regarding both lines of scrimmage. The Hurricanes will need to rotate starting tackles and edge rushers on both offense and defense.

If any team can endure that challenge, it’s Miami. With strong recruiting efforts in the trenches, they’re well-equipped to recover after players went undrafted in April.

A potential upset alert for the College Football Playoff race in 2026, spanning from LSU to Georgia.

Former five-star recruit Justin Scott should help anchor the defensive line, while ex-Missouri edge rusher Damon Wilson has become a sought-after player through the transfer portal.

Is this a team that can compete with Miami? That’s a tricky question.

The Hurricanes do have a tendency to stumble in a game or two during conference play, but this year’s league schedule feels particularly manageable, even by ACC standards.

It’s tough to pinpoint a likely loss for Miami, except perhaps during a trip to Notre Dame on Halloween. Yet, don’t overlook a potential clash with Clemson in early October.

I might be getting a bit ahead of myself here, but I have a feeling coach Dabo Swinney is setting the Tigers up for a strong comeback in 2026.

They’re one of the few teams close enough to create tension with the Canes regarding roster depth, and they’re not far removed from winning the conference and earning a College Football Playoff berth.

Besides the Tigers, keep an eye on SMU; they caught Miami off guard last season.

Although the Mustangs and Hurricanes won’t face each other in the regular season, if both teams meet in the ACC Championship, it wouldn’t be surprising if head coach Rhett Lashley acknowledges the talent of Cristobal’s squad.

There’s a clear reason behind Miami’s favored status heading into 2026. It feels like this could finally be the year where things align for them. It might sound wild to say about a team that reached the CFP Finals just a few months ago, but it’s true.

With offensive prowess, elite coaching, and a hefty talent advantage across the board, not to mention a relatively weak conference schedule, the Canes could finally see themselves winning the ACC next year.

With the season nearing its start, Miami will have the opportunity to showcase their abilities on the field.

Get ready, Canes fans.
