Ohio Mother of 16 Seeks Reunification with Children During Trial

An Ohio mother facing serious child abuse charges has made a request through her attorney to reunite with her children during her trial this week. Elizabeth Siders, 33, is charged with multiple counts of child endangerment alongside her husband, Gary Siders Jr., and two older relatives. Currently, she’s being held on a $300,000 bail, but her attorney, J. Thomas Storey, is advocating for her release under specific conditions due to her clean criminal history.

The court filing indicates that the defendant’s primary wish is to be with her children. She realizes that appearing in court is crucial for any possibility of reunification, as stated by her attorney.

Storey’s request claims that Siders is not a threat to her children since they are not in her care at this time. However, a judge has yet to decide on this matter.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Both Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders also face 16 counts of second-degree child endangerment. During a recent court hearing, the judge entered not guilty pleas for the defendants and set bail for all four at $300,000.

Authorities haven’t confirmed if all 16 children are siblings, but they mentioned that their ages range from 18 months to 18 years and include both boys and girls.

Condition of the Children and Official Responses

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer noted that the suspects are not residents of Vinton County. He emphasized that this case is related to family matters and not human trafficking, assuring that other children are not in danger.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his heartbreak over the conditions the children were in, acknowledging the medical issues faced by some. He praised the efforts of child welfare workers and law enforcement in assisting these children.

Following the removal of the children from their home, Attorney General Andy Wilson described the situation as the worst he’s encountered, referring to it as “pure evil.” Some children were found in critical condition, with two requiring immediate medical attention.

According to Sheriff Ryan Cain, the home contained an alarming amount of waste and bacteria, highlighting the grim circumstances surrounding the children.
