ACC Swimming Championship goes from horrible fiasco to beautiful lesson on sportsmanship

North Carolina State University swimmer Owen Lloyd was elated. He had just won his ACC championship in the men’s 1650-yard freestyle, and when his teammate Ross’ Dant touched the wall in his second, he jumped for joy and was so excited about this team. I celebrated with my mate. They knew they would be standing side by side on the podium.

Then disaster struck. ACC officials informed Lloyd that he would be disqualified for “interfering with another swimmer” because he jumped on the rope to celebrate and fell into a teammate’s lane. The ruling dragged Lloyd off the podium and awarded the victory to his teammate Dant.

When the dust settled, Danto was furious that he had been chosen first, even though he knew with every fiber of his being that Lloyd was the winner.

“I think that’s the stupidest rule in swimming. Owen beat me fair and square. He should be on that podium. He was excited. It’s a big moment for him, right? He earned it. He earned it and that’s how he feels. If you do well in the sport of swimming, that’s what you get. We strive for moments like that. It’s the stupidest thing ever for him to be disqualified when he’s been training all year. He works so hard every day. He’s going to ride that No. 1 trophy. I’m up there. I have no intention of standing there.”

It remains unclear how authorities feel Mr. Lloyd broke the rules. People at Swim Swam, a popular swimming blograised the ACC rules regarding this decision, but how Lloyd actually violated the rules is a bit unclear.

Article 1 Any competitor who interferes with another competitor during a race will be disqualified from that race at the discretion of the referee.

The problem was that Lloyd didn’t get in the way of the other swimmers because Dant had already finished his swim as well. Also, since the two are teammates on the North Carolina State swim team, they didn’t jump into another team’s lane. There is there is nothing This rule stipulates that while another swimmer is finishing his race, he may move into the lane of his opponent.

The result is still the same, Dant is currently the winner in the eyes of the ACC, and the officials have not said anything about this decision.

It is clear that this judgment is foolish. Maybe if he made fun of other schools or if other swimmers took issue with it. perhaps There will be some justification here. But in the case of the second-place swimmer, the athlete who officials say was thwarted has slammed the ruling, saying, “No, I wasn’t thwarted.” Probably need to go back and revise the decision.

Kudos to my stand-up teammate, Ross Danto, who showed incredible class in this moment. It’s unfortunate that the ACC allowed this to happen.
