A woman from Bergen County has been sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to repay over $1 million after she confessed to submitting 177 fraudulent tax returns for a client, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Josh Lynley, 49, from Elmwood Park, had earlier pleaded guilty to assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, evasion, and filing misleading declarations on behalf of her firm.
Between March 2010 and September 2023, Lynley reportedly filed multiple false tax returns for herself, her clients, and her business.
She was charged with using misleading and inflated figures, including exaggerated expenses and deductions, to secure larger tax refunds.
Lynley filed incorrect tax returns for herself during a span of more than a decade, specifically between 2010 and 2013.
In total, she submitted 177 false returns for her client, along with three incorrect quarterly employment returns for her tax prep business.
Alongside her prison term, Lynley will have three years of supervised release and is required to pay back over $1.1 million in restitution.
Lynley’s attorneys did not respond to requests for comment.
