Acne creams such as Estée Lauder’s Clinique, Toro Pharmaceuticals’ Proactiv and Reckitt Benckiser’s Clearasil contain carcinogens, according to a laboratory that tested dozens of consumer products. Dozens of consumer products were tested and found to contain the chemical.

Benzoyl peroxide is a topical antiseptic found in anti-acne creams and facial cleansers.

Valisure said that not only over-the-counter products sold through prescriptions, but also “can exceed the conditionally restricted FDA benzene concentration limit (2 parts per mission) by 800 times.”

Other products in which benzene has been detected include PanOxyl, Walgreens acne soap bars, and Walmart’s Equate Beauty acne cream.

Spokespeople for Target, Estée Lauder, Walmart and Reckitt could not immediately be reached for comment.

The FDA has not yet responded to Valisure’s petition.

In 2021, after Johnson & Johnson announced it was recalling five sunscreen products due to low levels of benzene, retail pharmacy chain CVS announced a recall of two store-brand products.

Consumers can purchase affected products, including Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen and four Neutrogena sunscreens: Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen, CoolDry Sport aerosol sunscreen, Invisible Daily Defense aerosol sunscreen, and UltraSheer aerosol sunscreen. A class action lawsuit has been filed against J&J over the recall.

Toro Pharmaceuticals’ Proactiv was also found to contain benzene. proactive

However, the detection of benzene in acne treatment products was “substantially different” from other cases, Valisure said.

“The benzene found in sunscreens and other consumer products was an impurity derived from contaminated raw materials. However, the benzene found in benzoyl peroxide products comes from the benzoyl peroxide itself.” said David Light, co-founder and president of Valisure.

Valisure said high concentrations of benzene have been detected not only in acne products, but also in the air around cultured products, and that some of the packaging could leak the carcinogen, posing a potential inhalation risk. It has been shown that there is a sex.
