Acting US attorney: Shooting at Dallas ICE facility 'the very definition of terrorism'

Shooting at ICE Facility in Dallas Deemed Terrorism

A U.S. attorney representing the Northern District of Texas labeled a shooting at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility as “the very definition of terrorism.” This incident, which occurred on Thursday, sparked significant concern.

Information obtained from the shooter’s residence indicated that he aimed to instill fear among ICE employees and disrupt their operations.

The shooter, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Yarn, opened fire from a nearby rooftop. During the chaos, detainees in a van also fired shots. Yarn, who hailed from Colin County, Texas, ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after local law enforcement intervened.

One detainee lost their life, and two others were reported to be in critical condition. On Thursday, authorities noted that the ICE and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) teams promptly evacuated detainees from the vehicle amid the gunfire.

The U.S. attorney, Nancy Larson, suggested that Yarn’s intention was focused on harming ICE personnel rather than the detainees, aiming to maximize property damage within the facility.

At a press briefing, FBI special agent Joseph Rothrock emphasized the premeditated nature of the attack, noting a memo from Yarn that suggested he hadn’t planned to survive. This insight pointed to “critical, advanced plans” in the lead-up to the event. Rothrock also indicated that Yarn had been actively searching for apps to track ICE agents between August 19 and 24, along with downloading documents detailing ICE facilities in Dallas just days prior to the attack.

FBI Director Kash Patel revealed that one of the shell casings found at the scene was inscribed with the words “anti-ICE.” While Yarn’s messages reflected a disdain for the federal government, no ties to organized groups were identified. Interestingly, former President Trump referred to the shooting as stemming from “left domestic terrorism.”

“Yarn wanted to impact ICE and law enforcement across the nation,” Rothrock remarked. “He didn’t want to affect the personnel involved in the immediate mission yesterday.”

This shooting marked the third threat against the local ICE facility since Larson assumed her position in May. In an earlier incident on July 4th, local law enforcement faced gunfire during an assault on an ICE detention center in Alvarado, Texas, resulting in multiple arrests.

Additionally, last month, an individual was apprehended for making a bomb threat at the very same facility where this latest shooting took place.

Marcos Charles, the deputy director of ICE’s enforcement and removal operations, commented on the alarming rise in assaults against ICE officers, attributing it to a dramatic increase in “violent rhetoric.” Since Trump took office, protests against ICE have spiked significantly.

“We urge individuals who promote violence to reconsider their rhetoric, as it endangers law enforcement officials,” Charles stated.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.
