Acting US Attorney Highlights Unusual Pattern in California Anti-ICE Protester Cases

Federal Prosecutors Address Anti-Deportation Riots

In California, federal prosecutors have noted that many of the individuals charged in connection with anti-deportation riots are actually U.S. citizens, a trend they find “strange.”

Bill Essayli, a U.S. lawyer, highlighted this pattern among over 50 suspects involved in violent protests against federal immigration enforcement in the state. He suggested that the growing mob violence since June reflects a political environment that seems to support illegal immigration, particularly under Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

“I think it’s quite interesting to see U.S. citizens so passionately fighting to prevent the deportation of illegal immigrants. Honestly, it’s a bit odd,” Essayli remarked. He added that it’s surprising to witness such fierce advocacy for non-citizens from both the public and political figures.

“I just hope these leaders, Newsom and Bass, show this kind of commitment to the American people as well,” he continued. “In my political experience, I haven’t seen such vigorous action for Americans in a long time.”

Newsom and Bass have criticized the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), claiming that the targeting of individuals can be indiscriminate. The governor’s administration has even deployed the National Guard to manage the protests and accused former President Trump’s administration of inciting chaos through aggressive immigration raids.

Essayli expressed hope that some of the cases related to these riots will progress to trial, and he plans to ensure that the court proceedings are fair. “Justice should be equitable for all involved,” he noted. “We’re working hard to ensure a thorough jury selection process to guarantee impartiality.”

The recent unrest has shed light on political violence, a topic that gained prominence during the protests linked to the Black Lives Matter movement. According to the Small Business Administration, the anti-ICE protests resulted in approximately $1 billion in damages in Los Angeles by July.

“We are looking into the orchestration of these events,” Essayli mentioned, referring to evidence that suggests planning behind the violence. Reports during the riots indicated that protesters were equipped with protective gear and engaged in acts that appeared coordinated.

Federal authorities have accused individuals of traveling to Los Angeles for demonstrations and allegedly bringing explosives from other states to incite violence against law enforcement. In one instance, demonstrators defending cannabis farms reportedly confronted ICE agents with tear gas and gunfire in a protest backed by certain activist groups.

Essayli stated that the investigation into potential funding behind these violent acts is ongoing, with allegations including obstruction and conspiracy. He emphasized that political violence is something America cannot overlook and must confront decisively.
