Free DC Promotes Jury Duty as a Tool for Social Justice

The left-leaning organization Free DC is educating residents of Washington, D.C. on how jury duty can serve as a means to protect marginalized individuals from social bias in the criminal justice system, according to their website.

On January 12th, Free DC will host an in-person event called “In Harriet’s Wildest Dreams,” where participants will discuss ways to safeguard those who, due to their identities, face unfair targeting by the legal system. Interestingly, Free DC is known for criticizing President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard and the heightened presence of federal law enforcement to address crime in D.C. Some consider the organization a notable figure in the anti-Trump movement within the capital.

While Free DC and Harriet’s Wildest Dreams did not respond to inquiries, the event overview emphasizes the importance of jury duty as more than just a civic duty. It states, “As community members, our participation on juries is essential to protecting the rights of those most vulnerable to systemic bias.” The group argues that jury service allows individuals to influence outcomes, thereby fostering fairer legal processes.

Financially, Free DC is described as a “special project” backed by two charitable organizations associated with the Tides Foundation and left-leaning financier George Soros’s Open Society Foundations.

This group previously responded to the shooting of two West Virginia National Guard soldiers who were patrolling D.C. on November 26. They expressed concerns about the safety of both the Guard and the local community, mourning the loss while criticizing the necessity of their deployment.
