Calls to End Blue Angels Airshow in Seattle Over Pollution Concerns

Climate activists in Seattle are urging an end to the Navy’s Blue Angels airshow, arguing that it is excessively loud and contributes to environmental pollution.

The Climate Action Coalition, comprised of local climate groups, has been vocal about their objections, rallying with phrases like “say no to the Blue Angels!” and highlighting issues such as “war trauma” and “pollution,” according to reports.

They are specifically protesting during the Seafair Festival in Seattle.

The Blue Angels, representing the Navy and Marines since 1946, consist of approximately 140 active sailors and marines, as detailed on their official website. They emphasize their role in showcasing the excitement and capabilities of Naval Aviation.

Aedan McCall, who designed a prominent billboard against the airshow, expressed concern over the “fallout effect” that he personally experienced living on Mercer Island. He pointed out that the Blue Angels generate about 670 tons of carbon emissions during their performances, describing this as a display of unnecessary American militarism.

A community organizer has also initiated a petition to end the Blue Angels’ participation in future events. Mary Patterson, a volunteer with 350 Seattle and part of the coalition behind the billboard, stated she does not oppose the Seafair overall but takes issue with the airshow sponsored by Boeing. She raised concerns about the noise levels, noting potential hearing impairment, especially in children.

In a related claim, a Seattle resident named Lauren Lombardi has reportedly filed a lawsuit against several Blue Angels officials, alleging that her cat’s health deteriorated due to the noise from the airshow. Additionally, Lombardi has accused the Blue Angels of blocking her on social media after she voiced her concerns on their Instagram page.
