Churchill Statue Vandalized Again
A significant statue of Sir Winston Churchill, noted British leader and wartime prime minister, located in Parliament Square, has been vandalized once more, this time by individuals reportedly supporting pro-Palestinian views.
The statue, which has stood outside the UK Houses of Parliament, was defaced overnight. Sir Winston Churchill spent around 40 years there, serving as an MP, cabinet member, and two-time Prime Minister. Various phrases were spray-painted in red on the statue and its base, including “Zionist war criminals,” “Liberate Palestine,” “Stop the genocide,” “Globalize the Intifada,” and “Never again now.”
The fourth side bore tags that included the Dutch phrase “Groeten uit Den Haag,” translating to “Greetings from The Hague,” along with “Kap Na,” a phonetic interpretation of a local accent implying “cut it out.”
Police Response
In an update, the Metropolitan Police confirmed an arrest had been made. They reported that officers reached the site within two minutes after receiving a call shortly after 4 a.m. A 38-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of racially aggravated crime.
According to current reports, the Dutch pro-Palestinian activist group Free the Filton 24 has claimed responsibility for the vandalism. This group’s name references a situation involving prisoners taken by the British government following a raid on a defense factory in Bristol by the Palestinian Direct Action Group.
It remains unclear if the individual arrested is a British citizen or a Dutch national.
Aftermath and Background
Following the discovery of the vandalism, Westminster City Council staff wrapped the statue in black plastic. Heritage cleaning experts began the process of removing the paint soon after.
It’s worth noting that the Metropolitan Police had previously vowed to take action against language regarded as inciting violence, especially in relation to protests. Last year, they responded to anti-Semitic incidents by stating that certain phrases would lead to arrests, emphasizing the weight words carry and the fact that circumstances can change rapidly.
The Churchill statue has been frequently targeted during protests over the past few years. Notably, there was even a moment in 2020 when it was completely hidden in a box, designed to protect it from potential damage — a nod to protective measures taken during WWII. There have been past instances of protests where phrases like “Churchill was a racist” were painted on statues, linked to various groups advocating for social justice.
