Jeffrey Wright Defends His Role as Jim Gordon in “Batman”
In a recent interview released on Wednesday, actor Jeffrey Wright, known for his role in “Batman,” voiced his frustration with critics who disapproved of his portrayal of Jim Gordon, a character historically depicted as white.
Wright, who is Black, expressed his disappointment over the backlash he has received on social media. He described the objections as “racist and stupid.”
Having portrayed Gordon in the 2022 film alongside Robert Pattinson, Wright acknowledged that while his performance was generally well-received, there were still negative reactions suggesting a “race swap” in the character’s depiction.
He remarked on the irony of the criticism, noting how it reflects a larger conversation about representation in media. “I think it’s interesting,” he stated, highlighting the ongoing discussions surrounding Black characters in prominent roles.
Wright pointed out that the evolution of these films is, in part, indicative of societal changes since the original comic was published in 1939. He argued that being resistant to such changes could hinder the franchise. “It’s just ridiculous,” Wright added, emphasizing that adapting characters to reflect contemporary society is logical and necessary.
He continued, explaining that a Black actor playing Gordon fits perfectly with the diversity of New York City, which served as inspiration for Gotham City. “It’s a multicultural place,” he said, reflecting on the film’s roots in the realities of urban life.
Wright also discussed his deep connection to the stories he’s part of, asserting that he feels a personal stake in the narratives. He believes that the original creators, Bob Kane and Bill Finger, would likely support this reimagining of their characters.
In his view, the success of these stories lies in the potential for imagination and evolution. Wright’s reflection showcases a nuanced understanding of tradition and change within storytelling, particularly in a genre like comic adaptations.
