Oscar-nominated actress Debra Winger has spoken out about having “debts to pay” to nurture Jews as she joined Trump Tower's protests over the arrest of anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil last week.
“I raised Jews. I raised a lot of things that are not true,” the 69-year-old winger told Al Jazeera on Thursday outside Trump's Midtown East Tower.
“I was raised a lot of things that weren't true. I had to learn them, and it took me years,” Winger said.
She explained, for example, that she disagreed with the ideas she grew up in – that Israel is the home of Jews.
“I have debts to pay. I have debts for what I grew up with. I believed in what the Israeli state did, what they weren't doing, and how they blended Judaism and Zionism,” she said of several Israeli advocates.
Winger, called Khalil, who was arrested by US immigrants for his role in the anti-Israel protests that rocked Colombia last year, has been called a winger called Khalil, who is facing deportation, accused Trump of running a fascist administration.
“[Khalil] He was illegally accused of his 8 month pregnant wife and took him to a private place. Does it sound like America? ” she said.
“They come first for students. They come to the university and try to take over the university. Read some history, all fascist governments do this,” Winger said. “They start with educators and students because that's where it's a strong movement.”
Halil, a 30-year-old Columbia University graduate and a Syrian-born green card holder, was arrested in his city apartment on March 8th and taken to an immigration detention center in Louisiana.
He has not yet been charged with a crime, but his arrest is what Trump called the first “what to come” for students engaged in “pro-terrorist, anti-Semitism, anti-American activities.”
Halil is said to be the leader of the group Columbia United apartheid, accused of supporting terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah and distributing propaganda.
The legality of his deportation is currently fighting in court, but his arrest has sparked protests across the country.
At Trump Tower last week, around 150 protesters from Jewish voices from the group for peace raided the atrium of a building wearing red t-shirts decorated with other slogans, “arming Israel.”
NYPD officials eventually descended on the crowd and arrested 98 people.
