Recently, Adam Brody, the Jewish actor known for his role in “The O.C.,” shared his views on the Israel-Palestine conflict, stating that he believes it constitutes “genocide.” He voiced these opinions during an interview with GQ Magazine, where he also discussed his political activism and work with the organization Swing Left. Brody hasn’t publicly delved into the Middle East situation before, but he mentioned that it has been a topic of private conversation for him.
“Count me in as someone who thinks it’s a genocide,” he expressed. “I want a free Palestine. It’s tragic that the world has witnessed so much death and suffering, yet it seems we’re finally approaching a crucial turning point. I’m hopeful that a different administration can bring about positive change to address the disastrous situation.”
In line with his sentiments, many other celebrities, including Mark Ruffalo and Macklemore, have referred to the conflict in similar terms. While there are voices in Hollywood opposing Israel’s actions, Brody observed a decline in political activism, noting that he usually doesn’t discuss political matters in many of his interviews.
Brody pointed out that Hollywood has grown more explicitly conservative during Trump’s later presidency. “It’s only natural that as one side gains power, others might feel compelled to follow suit due to human tendencies like groupthink or self-preservation,” he added.
In response to Brody’s comments, a representative from Fox News reached out for further insights but didn’t receive an immediate reply.
Christian Toto, founder of “Hollywood in Toto,” shared his perspective, suggesting that while it might be slightly easier for conservatives in Hollywood now, the entrenched culture of groupthink and backlash continues to exert significant pressure. “Activism may have quieted post-2024 election, but recently we’ve seen it returning to its former intensity. If Brody genuinely felt unsafe expressing his views, then he likely wouldn’t be making such bold statements. Aligning with hard-left views actually benefits him as an actor in today’s climate within the industry,” Toto remarked.
