American Husbands: A Cautionary Style Tale

Attention, American husbands: Adam Sandler might not be the best role model for your wardrobe choices.

At a significant event recently, specifically his wife’s movie premiere, Sandler stepped onto the red carpet looking like he had just wrapped up a day of remote work, probably with the camera off during a Zoom call.

He wore a baggy Knicks hoodie. And those cobalt blue pants? They fit poorly and draped over his worn sneakers. Yikes.

This is Hollywood—it’s not a gym.

Sandler isn’t alone in this fashion faux pas. Justin Bieber also caught attention for his odd ensemble, which included ankle-length athletic shorts, mid-thigh jeans, and outrageous sunglasses while out with his stylish wife, Hailey.

What I’m really getting at is, let’s not normalize such careless fashion choices. Men, you absolutely can do better.

I invest in clothing for reasons beyond just aesthetics. Sure, I understand the allure of tracksuits—comfort is key. But dressing down can appear disrespectful, especially when standing next to someone like Jackie Sandler, who looked fantastic in her all-black outfit at the premiere.

Others agree with this sentiment.

“This guy is such a poseur/loser,” one commenter on Reddit pointed out about Sandler’s look.

Another observed, “He can dress up for his own projects, but for his wife’s premiere, at least khakis and a polo would suffice.” It’s interesting how some people expect different attire for different situations.

At nearly 20 years his junior, I feel like I’ve absorbed more style lessons in my thirties than Sandler has at 59.

Putting effort into your wardrobe not only brings personal respect but also attracts acknowledgment from others.

In the past two years, I’ve dedicated at least $10,000 to custom pants crafted from vintage materials and high-quality blazers from the 1980s—a figure well within Sandler’s means.

This may seem extravagant, but as I approached a new decade in life, I deemed it a worthy investment.

Choosing my outfits became a daily ritual, akin to having my morning coffee, and I love accessorizing with antique rings.

Jewelry isn’t solely for women—just ask Mr. T.

Though my circumstances haven’t changed, putting in effort every day has been a huge confidence booster.

In fact, ever since I began being mindful of my appearance, I consistently receive compliments.

Just a few weeks ago, a woman on the subway complimented my outfit.

“I love your ring,” she said, introducing herself as Steph.

Then, her gaze shifted to my polished loafers beneath my wide-legged pants, and she added, “I actually love your whole vibe.”

Clearly, not every man prioritizes such details, but it seems she appreciated encountering someone who does.

So there we were, sharing the subway and discussing the significance of dressing well.

Perhaps you feel good regardless of your wardrobe choices.

But styles like low-slung athletic pants and holey shirts can turn people away or make them overlook you, and that’s not for the right reasons.

Red carpet appearances should be reserved for something much more polished—a lesson to remember.
