California Sen. Adam Schiff resigned from his House seat earlier than expected on Friday to take up the Senate seat on Monday.
Schiff was elected to the California State Senate on Nov. 5, replacing former Democratic Sen. LaFonza Butler, who was appointed following the death of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein in September 2023. . Mr. Butler, who has been a senator ever since, made that choice. Not to run for the next term.
Notably, Schiff was at the forefront of the now-debunked Russian collusion hoax during the 2016 election.
“I am honored to have been chosen by the voters of California to be the next U.S. senator, following in the footsteps of former Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a true giant of the Senate and my mentor,” said Schiff. Ta. said He said this in his resignation letter on Friday.
“It has been an honor to represent the people of California's 30th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for the past 24 years,” Schiff continued. “I am so grateful to the voters who gave me the opportunity to serve in the House of Representatives, and to the people of California who gave me another opportunity to serve the state I love in the Senate.”
Schiff is currently scheduled to be sworn in on Monday, along with New Jersey Democratic Sen.-elect Andy Kim. Kim was chosen to replace former Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, who resigned in August, a month after a jury found him guilty of federal bribery charges.
“On behalf of all Californians, I look forward to working to ensure California continues to provide opportunity, creativity, innovation, and a great quality of life for generations to come,” Schiff said in the letter. “There is,” he said.
The Biden administration is reportedly considering preemptive pardons for a variety of government officials, including former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and even Schiff.
Notably, Schiff was at the forefront of the now-debunked Russian collusion hoax during the 2016 election. Although the allegations against Trump turned out to be unfounded, the next senator could fall into Trump's path of retaliation once he takes office. Mr. Schiff said he did not want a preemptive pardon.
