Adam Schiff to Take Office Monday, Not in January, After Newsom Makes Power Play to Help California

Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) was appointed after incumbent Sen. LaFonza Butler (D-Calif.) abruptly resigned and California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) confirmed Mr. Schiff's appointment. State) will be sworn in by U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Monday, Dec. 9. early.

While this gambit is technically legal, it is an obvious attempt by California to gain an upper hand in the Senate by giving Schiff more seniority than senators from other states, who will be sworn into office on January 3, 2025. This is an attempt.

Newsom's office said in a statement:

Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the appointment of U.S. Senator-elect Adam Schiff to serve out the remainder of his term in the U.S. Senate following the resignation of Senator LaFonza Butler.
Senator Butler announced that he will resign effective December 8, 2024, in order to ensure that Californians have duly elected representatives seated as quickly as possible. Senator-elect Schiff, elected for a term beginning in January, is scheduled to take office on Monday, December 9, 2024.

Newsom appointed Butler after Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) died while in office last year. Some black members of the Democratic Party were furious at the decision not to appoint Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), who was running for Senate against Mr. Schiff at the time.

Once again, Schiff's rise may raise some eyebrows as it means black women have had to step back.

Mr. Schiff was in the news Sunday for another reason. President-elect Donald Trump told NBC News that he believes all members of the Jan. 6 commission, including Schiff, should be jailed for violating civil liberties.

Schiff replied:

Schiff is deeply disliked by Republicans, including many of the senators who voted against the effort to remove then-President Donald Trump from office in his first impeachment. He's not particularly popular in California either, but he's a very successful fundraiser and a good political player.

In 2024, Schiff paid for ads promoting his Republican opponent, Dodgers great Steve Garvey. As a result, he finished second in the “jungle” primary and will advance to the general election instead of a Democrat who could have been a stronger opponent.
