NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has adopted a rather critical stance regarding the safety of one of the WNBA’s top stars, Caitlin Clark. Rather than focusing on the direct issues surrounding her treatment during games, Silver appeared more intent on downplaying the controversy.
At a CNBC Sports Summit in New York, Silver had the chance to address the situation but instead suggested that the debate over Clark was more politically motivated than centered on the physical treatment she has faced on the court.
One particular Republican lawmaker has even urged WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to take measures to better protect Clark.
Silver remarked, “I’ve gotten to know Caitlin well. She’s an incredible player and a genuinely nice person. She wants to excel at her game. Unfortunately, she’s become a political pawn in this country, which I think is extremely unfair.” This characterization, however, seems to overlook concerns raised by Clark’s supporters.
Many advocates for Clark contend that Silver is missing the mark. They argue he has redirected attention away from the harsh fouls and physical confrontations that have drawn criticism of the league, even implying that the core issue lies not in the officiating but in the surrounding controversies.
“Ultimately, the focus on Caitlin Clark isn’t just about how the game is officiated; it’s not solely about whether a foul was called,” he added.
As Clark’s advocates have observed, she has endured numerous tough fouls this season, making Silver’s comments feel somewhat unconvincing.
Furthermore, his involvement in discussions regarding player conduct raises additional concerns. Reports indicate that he sought input from Engelbert before a controversial penalty was handed to Phoenix Mercury player Alyssa Thomas for a serious foul. When pressed for confirmation on the matter, Silver sidestepped the question, stating, “I’m not going to comment on that because I don’t think it’s fair to Caitlin or Kathy Engelbert.”
While Silver acknowledged the need for improved officiating in the WNBA, he quickly brushed aside broader inquiries regarding Clark’s treatment, which many believe require more urgent attention.
In a time when action was necessary, Silver chose to focus on optics rather than the real issues at hand.
