Adult teen who allegedly open-fired on DC street granted pre-trial home arrest

An 18-year-old adult man in Washington, D.C., has been granted house arrest despite being accused of firing dozens of shots on the streets of the city, putting the public in grave danger.

April 22nd, just before 2:30 a.m., 18 years old Amonte Moody He apparently ran out of his home and fled to the area of Independence Avenue SE, about a mile and a half east of the U.S. Capitol. Moody, who was reportedly in possession of an AR-15, then fired multiple shots in the street, footage from two Ring cameras showed.

Camera footage does not show the suspect’s intended target, but reports say Moody appeared to be targeting a vehicle with four passengers inside. Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident.

When police arrived, they reportedly recovered 26 empty shell casings from the street and a disassembled AR-15 hidden in the ceiling of Moody’s residence. Moody was then arrested and later charged with endangerment with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Despite the violent nature of the incident and incriminating evidence collected by investigators, on May 3, Justice of the Peace Lloyd Nolan Mr. Moody was granted pretrial release and house arrest in suburban Maryland. Nolan ordered Moody to wear a bracelet on his ankle and to avoid any contact with the passengers in the vehicle who allegedly attempted to harm him.

In an interview with Blaze News, Dennis Klepp, a Washington, D.C.-area attorney who once served as chief counsel for the U.S. Maritime Administration under President Barack Obama, called Nolan’s decision to release Moody “insane.” I called it.

Klepp also said that while D.C. judges have the discretion to send violent suspects back to prison, they too often choose to release them, prioritizing personal gain over public safety. told the news.

“Where are the adults?” Klepp asked rhetorically about the D.C. area’s justice system. “Where are the real adults?”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., is similarly outraged by the judge’s decision. On Monday, prosecutors requested an emergency hearing in hopes of overturning the decision to release Moody.

“The defendant unloaded his AR-15 into the middle of a public housing area. The defendant fired 26 shots, scattering shell casings across the street. Anyone who happened to be in that street at that moment was treated as an innocent bystander. He could have been killed.” Everyone in the car targeted by the defendant was at risk. All residents of that street were at risk,” the USAO filing reads in part.

A hearing on Moody’s pretrial status is scheduled for Tuesday.
