A grassroots group named Veteran Action, consisting of military personnel, veterans, and advocates, has launched a campaign against Arizona Democratic Senator Reuben Gallego. Their aim is to promote national security and support for veterans.
The campaign features ads on their YouTube channel, titled “Skanbug Senator Reuben Gallego is abandoning his veterans.” These ads accuse Gallego of both personal and professional failings.
The video asserts, “Skanbug Senator Reuben Gallego has abandoned his nine-month pregnant wife. It’s no surprise that he’s abandoning his veteran right now.”
Furthermore, a separate group of Arizona veterans has voiced serious concerns about Gallego, particularly in connection with allegations of mortgage fraud. Reports from 2023 claimed that he may have improperly listed his Arizona and Washington, DC properties to secure favorable VA mortgage terms. This prompted calls for an investigation and raised questions about the Department of Veterans Affairs’ response.
In his Senate campaign against Republican Kari Lake, Gallego has also faced scrutiny regarding his divorce from Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.
In a statement from his opponent’s senior adviser, Caroline Wren, last October, she remarked, “If Reuben Gallego turns away from his pregnant wife the day before giving birth, he will turn away from Arizona.”
The Veterans Action Campaign ads also criticized Gallego for opposing the nomination of Republican Sam Brown as the Commemorative Secretary for Veterans Affairs. Brown, a wounded Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, was confirmed recently.
Mark Lucas, founder of Veteran Action, shared insights in a press release regarding the campaign.
This initiative is seen as part of a broader strategy heading into the 2028 presidential race, especially as Gallego is considered a potential Democratic candidate. He has already visited key early voting states like Pennsylvania, Iowa, and New Hampshire.
