High risk, high reward. That may not be the official idea behind AEW’s Blood and Guts match, but it captures what wrestlers face when they step into the two-ring setup and find themselves beneath a towering steel cage.
Darby Allin took things to another level during Wednesday’s special edition of “Dynamite.” He teamed with Will Ospreay, Adam Copeland, Steve Borden, and Matt and Nick Jackson against the Don Callis Family: Jake Doyle, Kazuchika Okada, Kevin Knight, Kyle Fletcher, Mark Davis, and Wardlow.
The night’s most dramatic moment belonged to Allin and Wardlow. Both men found a way out of the cage: Allin squeezed through a gap in the structure and went after Don Callis, while Wardlow forced open a door on the opposite side and chased him to the top.
Trent Baretta and Rocky Romero joined the action outside the cage, setting up several tables near the entrance as the two wrestlers fought overhead. Wardlow tried to throw Allin from the top, but Allin escaped and struck him with a low blow.
Inside the ring, the Don Callis Family gained control. They wrapped a chain around Copeland’s neck and secured him to the cage. Copeland eventually gave up, stopping Fletcher from stabbing Ospreay in the head with a screwdriver. The danger wasn’t over, though.
Fletcher told Wardlow to throw Allin off the cage. Allin, who has built a reputation for taking punishing risks, fell several feet and crashed through the tables Baretta and Romero had arranged below.
It was a jarring impact. Allin appeared to break through at least two of the four tables, sending a clear warning ahead of Full Gear: the Don Callis Family is ready to do serious damage.
Several members of the group will compete for titles at the pay-per-view. Davis and Doyle are set to challenge The Young Bucks for the AEW World Tag Team Championship, while Fletcher will face Ospreay for the AEW World Championship.
Full Gear is scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix.
