African country expresses openness to extraditing Ilhan Omar following immigration fraud allegations

Somaliland Calls for Extradition of Rep. Ilhan Omar

Somaliland, a partially recognized African nation, is seeking the extradition of Representative Ilhan Omar after Vice President J.D. Vance accused her of immigration fraud. The White House has indicated intentions to pursue action against her.

The official X account for Somaliland responded to the situation with a rather cheeky post: “Deportation? Just send the princess back to the kingdom, please. Extradition? Just say something…”

Although Somaliland has functioned as an autonomous region since 1991, it lacks formal recognition from most nations, including the United States.

Born in Somalia, Omar has openly opposed any recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.

In a podcast interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, Vance discussed possible links between Omar and a significant welfare fraud case in Minnesota involving some individuals from the Somali community.

“Ilhan Omar has undoubtedly committed immigration fraud against the United States,” Vance claimed during the interview.

He also questioned what legal actions could be taken against her, stating, “Now that we know she committed immigration fraud, what are our legal remedies? How do we go after her? How do we investigate?”

The conversation included calls for an investigation into Omar’s involvement in the fraud scheme, which allegedly drained over $1 billion from low-income families, leading to numerous arrests—many of whom were Somali immigrants.

Omar has faced ongoing scrutiny regarding her first marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. It was suggested by Abdihakim Osman, a Somali blogger from Minneapolis, that Omar had introduced Elmi to community members as her brother during their childhood in Minnesota.

In response to these allegations, Omar previously mentioned to People that her brother was in search of “documents,” specifically immigration-related paperwork.

She has denied any wrongdoing, labeling the accusations as “bigoted lies” and arguing that former President Trump has fixated on her issues.
